Day 14 – Bbbbuuummmmpppyyy!

The Dempster Highway to Tuk is about 500 miles of gravel roads. Some is smooth, but most of it is bumpy. Our average speed for the 6 days traveling it was about 30 mph. Trying to take photos from a bumping vehicle is challenging. Of course, trying to time the sip of coffee was a trick. More often than not, that was a fail. But we made it, and after a couple of days break in Dawson, we’ll be back on gravel again.

Day Twenty-Two – Lobsta’ Fishin’

While sitting on the bank of the Atlantic Ocean, we perused flyers and visitor information magazines we had picked up. One flyer in particular caught our eye. A two-hour trip with a lobster fisherman while he pulled his lobster pots. Better yet, the excursion left from the port of Ogunquit which was just a short distance up the coast from us. The following day with a calm ocean under a blue sky we boarded the boat to go “Lobsta’ Fishin” (the new England accent was pretty pronounced in parts of Maine). Our captain has a string of pots just offshore from the port. While we cruised to pick the first pot, we learned that lobster fisherman can have up to 80 pots out. They alternate picking some pots while others are soaking. The lobster fishery is highly regulated. Each of the feisty lobster caught in the pots were carefully measured to determine if it could be kept or if it had to return to the ocean. Day 7 - Boondocking

Sometimes people ask us how we know where to camp. The answer is that we don't always know. So far on this trip from prior trips we knew of some camps that we enjoyed, like that on the Clark Fork River and the one at Gem Mountain. However, other times we don't have a clue where we will end up! When traveling we ALWAYS have a map. Yes, the good old fashioned paper map that gets folded and unfolded so many times holes get worn on the folds... of course Murphy's Law dictates that frequently those worn out places are just where we need to go.  You might say, "But what about your truck's nav system or your phone's map app?" Well, we use those as well, but sometimes they really don't help or send us the wrong way. When in doubt, we go with what the paper map shows. Day Twelve – Heading to the Northwoods

Crossing from Duluth, Minnesota, over into Superior, Wisconsin, not only brought us to another state, but to another set of experiences. We didn’t travel far to see some large historical homes facing the shore of Lake Superior. How many of us have heard the famous lines from Henry Wadsworth’s poem “Song of Hiawatha” By the shore of Gitchee Gumee, By the shining Big-Sea-Water... Although we had heard these lines many times, we did not know that it was the Ojibwe tribe name for Lake Superior. This was just the first bit of new information that we encountered during our brief travel through Wisconsin. Referring to the lake as a big sea, totally makes sense since it is gigantic. We also learned that the northern portion of Wisconsin is called the “Northwoods”.
