Day 7 – Montana Roads

Often people ask us why we like to take road trips. Or they ask Pat if he minds driving that far. Another question is whether we take turns driving.

Well, the answer to the first question is that we both enjoy watching the scenery change as we drive along. Often the environment will change just going over a rise or around a bend. All the miles that we have traveled, the change in scenery still surprises and enthralls us. Even those vast expanses that we have traveled across, which can be tedious at times, remind us that the Earth is a pretty amazing place.

As for the second question, with Pat’s years of truck driving, he got used to days much longer than we usually travel in a day. And when he see’s something interesting, we can stop to explore, rather than driving on which he had to do when it was a job.

Finally, the answer to the third question, is that Pat drives most of the time. I do drive sometimes, however, we each have our fortes. Pat doesn’t really enjoy having to snap photos of the sights that I want recorded. Also, I tend to navigate and plan routes more when not driving.

We started the blog five years ago on our first journey to Alaska. Pat’s mom was worried about our traveling and we thought it might allay those fears if she knew where we were. As it turned out, when the miles roll along, we have enjoyed chatting about what we could put in a blog.

Montana has been a great example of why we enjoy road trips. The scenes are so varied. Green pine covered forests and dry sagebrush hills. Sparkling lakes and burbling creeks. Wide open valleys bordered by tall mountains and rolling hills with sparse brush in the hollows.

Some places we return to, but there is always something new to see or experience out there somewhere. A favorite quote of ours from Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” which kind of sums up are reason to travel.

Happy Trails!
