Day 2 - Phillipsburg – Part 1

About a day and a half from Olympia, is a small Montana town that we thoroughly enjoy visiting. Platted in 1867 by mining engineer, Phillip Deidesheimer, Phillipsburg currently has a population of about 850.  There is one main road in town and no stop lights, although there are several stop signs. You can't get lost in this little town, but you can spend hours exploring it.

Originally, this community was a built to support a smelter, but now there are many tourist activities that draw people from around the country. Buildings from the turn of the century are in various stages of repair. One of my favorite buildings is called the Sweet Palace. Walking through the door of this candy store gives you the feeling that you stepped back in time. The walls are lined with cubbies, bins, and barrels of sweets. There are old fashioned sugar sticks, zots, and every other candy in between.

The Sweet Palace boasts hand dipped chocolates, taffy flavors galore, and a spectacular selection of fudge.

The story goes that the original owner, Pete Winninghof, loved penuche fudge. When he made it, the local children would stop by his house, and he would give them some of his delicious fudge. Eventually, the store expanded and developed into the Sweet Palace.

It is said that early on Pete would hide a sapphire in the boxes of hand dipped chocolates. What’s our favorite flavor of fudge? It must be the chocolate-mint… no, the peanut butter fudge is best… hmm the dark chocolate moose drool (made with moose drool beer) is pretty fabulous, but who could pass on the salted caramel… I guess you will have to make a trek to the Sweet Palace to decide for yourself.
